London Dramatic Academy

Introduction

The London Dramatic Academy addresses theatre as a craft and enables students to improve their skills during the intensive fourteen week semester. LDA is not confined to one method but offers the widest variety of instruction. Integral to the programme are weekly visits to London theatres such as the National, the Royal Court, the Almeida, and the Barbican. Students should experience diverse forms of performance. In addition to plays, participants attend ballet and modern dance performances, opera, and a symphony concert. The semester's programme also includes exclusive performances at the Centre given by distinguished actors.
 

Facilities

The London Dramatic Academy is located at 23 Kensington Square, in one of the most charming areas of London and only five minutes from the High Street Kensington underground station. Centrally located, near museums such as the Victoria and Albert, the Science, and the Natural History, LDA shares its premises with Heythrop College, the philosophy and religion school of the University of London. The program has large studios, a library, and smaller rooms for tutorial work. A full-time academic coordinator and office staff are on site to oversee housing, orientation, counseling, events, and activities for all students. Campus facilities include a library, computer lab, cafeteria, and common room. 
 

Eligibility

In addition to the GPA requirement, students from the School of Music must already have completed the entire theory sequence and one musical theatre internship prior to starting an application.

Drama students may also be eligible to attend this program during the fall semester and should contact CUAbroad if interested.
 

Academics & Curriculum

LDA offers undergraduate courses that students may apply toward a degree at CUA's School of Music. Classes run normally from 9:30 am - 5:30 pm (with breaks) on Monday through Friday. Occasionally there is weekend work, but there are also two breaks during the semester, one of three and one of four days. The programme consists of four courses that provide students with a comprehensive learning experience in theatre.
  • LODA 3010 Acting (6 credits) - Includes Acting, Acting Shakespeare, and Audition Tutorials
  • LODA 3020 Theatre History (3 credits) - Includes Space, Place & Text, and Dramatic Criticism
  • LODA 3030 Physical Training for Actors (4 credits) - Includes Movement, Physical Theatre, Stage Combat, Period Dance, and Alexander Technique
  • LODA 3040 Voice Training for Actors (3 credits) - Includes Voice and Speech/Dialects
     

Accommodation & Meals

Fordham University reserves rooms and flats for students in various centrally-located neighborhoods with providers who specialize in student housing. LDA students are housed particularly close to campus due to their full timetable of classes at the Centre. After acceptance, students attending this program will need to work with Fordham University to reserve their housing.

Room amenities include a twin bed with linen, a wardrobe, dresser and desk, as well as communal bathroom and shower facilities on each floor. While  cooking facilities are not available in all accommodations, the London Centre can assist in arranging the purchase of a refrigerator, microwave, and kettle, if desired. Students staying at the Atlantic House are required to purchase a meal plan, and have the option between 10 and 18 meals per week.
